What is the Difference between Website Design and Website Development?

The terms web design and web development are often used interchangeably in the world of media and advertising.  However, they are not the same thing at all.

The term web design, simply put, refers to the part of the website that the customer sees when they land on your website.   A web designer is the person who designs the look and feel of your site, the content of your site, and the usability of your site.

The term web development is the development of the back end of your site- the programming and the interactions on the page.  A web developer is the person who focuses on how your site works, and how the customer gets things done on your site.

There are four basic parts of designing and developing a website:

For the web designer:

The Aesthetics- what the user sees, i.e. graphics, color schemes, navigational elements

The Content- the information or products that are available to the user on the website.

The Usability- how the website performs for the end user.

For the web developer:

The Functionality- the infrastructure (how it is built) needed to provide interactive features to the website.

The Usability- how the website performs for the end user.
